Spartan, Jeff Housel shows how he Eats The Bear. “My story starts way back in 2002 when I was going to school at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. I did a lot of exercising and the occasional triathlon. I ended up getting really sick and went to the hospital a few days in a row. While at the hospital the last time I had a seizure. After, some testing the determined that I was having a type of stroke in the sinus region of my brain. I was lucky enough that they caught it in time and were able to do surgery to break up the clot. I spent the next few months learning to walk, read, talk, write again. My right side was temporarily paralyzed. I was able to finish college and have fully recovered.

Fast forward to 2016. I had just done my first 1/2 marathon and my friend threw out a challenge to do the Seattle Beast Spartan race. I trained like crazy lost a lot of weight and felt great. Then one day started having chest pain. I attributed the chest pain to burpees and sort of blew it off. Then one Sunday I started coughing up blood. I went to the hospital and found out I had a bi-lateral pulmonary embolism. Basically, blood clots in both lungs. I had to skip the Beast race in October 2016. Turns out I have a clotting disorder so I take blood thinners.
I am heading to Sun Peaks, Canada to do the Beast and get my TRIFECTA in September.
